DIAMOND LAKE, OR – A skier died Thursday afternoon after being caught in an avalanche on the north/northwest side of Mt. Bailey near Diamond Lake in southwestern Oregon. The incident occurred within a motorized closure area where a group of skiers was participating in a guided cat skiing trip operated by Diamond Lake Resort.
Authorities identified the victim as 50-year-old Brian Thomas Roberts
of Bend, Oregon. According to reports, Roberts was buried under the snow around 3:45 p.m. after an avalanche struck the group. Other skiers in the party quickly worked to dig him out, and two nurses present attempted lifesaving measures. However, he did not survive.
The ski group was the fourth of the day to access the area through the resort’s guided trips. Despite prior avalanche test digs, conditions led to the slide. The remaining skiers traveled approximately two miles to the nearest snowmobile trail, where they met responders and resort staff.
Emergency personnel assessed additional injuries at Three Lakes Snow Park. One skier sustained a laceration or puncture wound, likely caused by a branch or ski pole, but declined ambulance transport.
Responding agencies included Diamond Lake Resort staff, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue teams, U.S. Forest Service law enforcement, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance. The Oregon Department of Emergency Management also assisted with the response.
Authorities continue to evaluate avalanche conditions in the area and urge outdoor enthusiasts to remain cautious.
