CATALDO, ID – A fire that broke out Monday evening in Cataldo is being attributed to a heat lamp, according to the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office. The device was being used to warm reptiles and other animals in the home. Officials confirmed that most of the resident’s pets died in the blaze.

In response, the Fire Marshal’s Office is urging caution, especially as spring brings an increase in small animal care. “Now that baby chicks are available at your local agricultural store, we are urging homeowners to consider using heat mats or other thermostatically controlled device, rather than using heat lamps,” the agency said. “These appliances are designed specifically for brooding chickens and other small critters.”

The office investigates numerous fires each year linked to heat lamps and extension cord failures.
