PULLMAN, WA— Pullman Police Chief Jake Opgenorth has submitted his resignation, effective March 27, 2025, according to a press release from the City of Pullman issued Friday.
Opgenorth’s resignation comes after more than 30 years in law enforcement. He had served as Pullman’s police chief since August 9, 2022. His departure follows a lengthy administrative leave that began on December 17, 2024.
The City of Pullman previously stated that it was informed of a “personal matter” involving Chief Opgenorth by the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office on the same day he was placed on leave. City Administrator Mike Urban and Mayor Francis Benjamin made the decision to place him on administrative leave, and the Washington State Patrol is conducting an investigation.
A civil protection order petition was filed against Opgenorth on December 20, 2024, in Whitman County Superior Court. The petition, filed by a Pullman woman, cites domestic violence and sexual assault as the basis for the request.
The City did not publicly confirm that Opgenorth was on leave until January 3, 2025. At the time, Mayor Benjamin said “the process” had reached a point where the city could legally disclose the chief’s status. The statement came after the situation had gained regional media attention.
Commander Aaron Breshears, who has served as Acting Police Chief since Opgenorth was placed on leave, will continue in that role until a new chief is appointed. According to the City of Pullman, more information about the transition process will be released in the coming weeks.
