Mega Millions Game Gets $5 Upgrade with Bigger Prizes and New Format

BOISE, ID – Changes are coming to Mega Millions, and they start this weekend.

Beginning Saturday, April 5, the popular multi-state lottery game will relaunch with a new ticket price and a revamped prize structure designed to boost non-jackpot winnings. The price of a single ticket will rise from $2 to $5, but with that comes the chance at larger payouts and a new multiplier feature.

The new format is a response to growing demand from players across the country to see more prize money shared among more winners, especially as billion-dollar jackpots have become increasingly common.

Each $5 ticket will include a randomly assigned multiplier—2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X—which will apply to non-jackpot prizes. Minimum non-jackpot prizes will start at $10, with the potential to win up to $10 million for matching all five white balls but not the Mega Ball.

Drawings will still take place every Tuesday and Friday at 9 p.m. Mountain Time. The first drawing using the new rules will be held on Tuesday, April 8.

The change is expected to bring additional support to Idaho public schools and buildings. Roughly 35% of the cost of every Mega Millions ticket sold in Idaho benefits these programs. Last year alone, Mega Millions contributed approximately $9.8 million to Idaho’s $84 million record dividend.

If no one wins the current $43 million jackpot in tonight’s drawing, it will roll over as the starting jackpot for the new game.

Tickets purchased for draws before April 5 will still follow the old prize matrix, and players will have 180 days from the draw date to claim any winnings under the current structure.

Idaho has participated in Mega Millions since 2010. In that time, the state has seen one jackpot winner and eight instant millionaires, along with 16 players who have each taken home at least $250,000.
