SAN ANTONIO, TX – No. 22 LC State Men’s Tennis opens postseason competition on Thursday at the NAIA Unaffiliated Group Tournament, the equivalent of a conference tournament for those not affiliated with a conference, in San Antonio. The Warriors open the week with a rematch with Texas A&M-Texarkana.
LC State faced Texas A&M-Texarkana earlier this season and fell 7-0. After that loss, the Warriors went on a five-match winning streak that was highlighted by an upset-win over then-No. 12 Williams Woods (Mo.).
The Warrior are led by freshman Pablo Herrera who has seen the most time in the top singles spot. Fellow freshman Giacomo Moreira will also likely factor into the top six, along with Nell Rollin, Austin Swing, Gautam Balakrishnan and Cesar Coloma. Four of the Warrios’ top singles players are freshmen, but the young team has shown a lot of potential this season.
LC State has been stronger in singles action this season. It has not been uncommon for the Warriors to trail after doubles and surge ahead in singles.
Senior Swing leads the Warrior with 11 singles wins this season, mostly out of the No. 4 position. Rollin has 10 victories, primarily at No. 3, Moreira has 10 and Herrera has nine.
Likely pairings in doubles play are Herrera and Moreira at No. 1, Swing and Camino at No. 2 and Coloma and Juan Pablo Naranjo at No. 3. Naranjo and Coloma were the lone pairing to earn a win in the match against Texas A&M-Texarkana earlier this season.
LC State takes on Texas A&M-Texarkana on Thursday at approximately 10 a.m. PT in San Antonio. The winner will advance in the single-elimination tournament.
