Idaho DMV Urges Online Renewals Ahead of REAL ID Deadline

BOISE, ID – With the May 7, 2025, REAL ID enforcement deadline quickly approaching, the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles is encouraging eligible residents to renew their driver’s licenses or identification cards online to help reduce congestion at DMV offices.

While individuals applying for a REAL ID—known in Idaho as the Star Card—must complete the process in person with specific documentation, the DMV notes that many other customers can “Skip the Trip” and renew online. This effort aims to ease in-person wait times, particularly at locations that accept walk-in appointments.

Customers who renew online can also receive a $5 discount on their transaction.

To be eligible for online renewal, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 21 and 69 (the expiration cannot exceed the 70th birthday),

  • Have had their last renewal within the past four years,

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident,

  • Hold a valid Idaho Class D license or ID card (even if expired),

  • Have a license that has not been expired for more than 25 months,

  • Not be making changes to name, endorsements, or restrictions,

  • Not be upgrading to a REAL ID (Star Card).

REAL ID upgrades require an in-person appointment and specific documentation. Individuals can schedule these appointments online at dmv.idaho.gov under the “Driver’s License/ID Cards” section.

To complete a renewal or find more information, Idahoans are encouraged to visit dmv.idaho.gov or call the DMV at (208) 584-4343.
