SPOKANE, WA — Clearwater Paper Corporation has reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2025, showing a significant increase in net sales driven largely by its acquisition of the Augusta mill.
The company posted net sales of $378 million for the quarter ending March 31, 2025—up 46% from $259 million in the same period last year. The increase was primarily attributed to higher sales volumes following the acquisition.
Clearwater Paper recorded a net loss from continuing operations of $6 million, or $0.36 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $2 million, or $0.12 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2024. The total net loss was also $6 million, or $0.38 per diluted share, compared to net income of $17 million, or $1.03 per diluted share, in the same period last year.
Adjusted EBITDA rose to $30 million, more than doubling the $14 million recorded in the first quarter of 2024. The company attributed the improvement to increased sales volume, the absence of weather-related disruptions at its Lewiston, Idaho facility, and early benefits from a cost reduction plan—though these were partially offset by lower average sales prices.
Sales volume rose 55% to 289,487 tons, up from 187,303 tons a year ago. The average net selling price of paperboard declined 7%, from $1,284 per ton to $1,188 per ton.
Clearwater Paper repurchased $11 million of outstanding shares during the quarter and highlighted continued progress in capturing synergies from the Augusta acquisition. CEO Arsen Kitch stated the integration of the Augusta mill is complete, with the company now focused on realizing full volume and cost benefits by the end of 2026.
