WENATCHEE, WA – Two hikers were rescued Monday evening after being swept downstream while attempting to cross a creek near French Creek on the Icicle Creek Trail.
According to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, a satellite 911 text was received around 3:30 p.m. on April 28, 2025, reporting that two 21-year-old hikers had been injured after trying to cross a fast-moving creek. The hikers were swept away, sustained minor lower-body injuries, and were able to reach the shore where they awaited assistance.
Chelan County deputies and 12 members of the county’s Volunteer Search and Rescue team responded to the scene. Personnel hiked approximately 1.5 miles to reach the hikers near the French Creek crossing, where the trail bridge was no longer usable due to heavy runoff.
Using rope equipment carried in by rescue volunteers, teams established a safe system to assist the hikers back across the creek. The hikers then walked out with rescuers, reaching the trailhead around 10:00 p.m.
Officials are urging caution for hikers this time of year, noting that high creek levels and runoff can be dangerous. The Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that as little as six inches of fast-flowing water can be enough to sweep a person off their feet.
