OLYMPIA, WA – The Imagination Library of Washington is urging public support as it faces potential funding challenges due to the state’s difficult budget year. The organization, which provides free books to children across Washington, relies on a state partnership that covers 50% of the monthly book and mailing costs.
According to a statement from the Imagination Library of Washington, the state’s financial contribution is now at risk, which could shift the entire cost burden onto local programs. Leaders warn that without continued state support, many of the 46 local Imagination Library programs may be forced to close.
The organization is encouraging parents, caregivers, and supporters to contact their legislators to express support for the program. Public participation is being promoted through several activities:
-
Share your story: Individuals are encouraged to tell lawmakers how free books have inspired a love of reading in their children. Legislators can be found at leg.wa.gov/legislators.
-
Color and send: Supporters can download a special coloring sheet to send to legislators as a reminder of the program’s importance. The sheet is available here.
-
Spread the word: Families are asked to post coloring pages on social media using the hashtag #SaveOurStoryWA and tag their representatives.
The Imagination Library, founded by Dolly Parton, provides free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to enrolled children from birth to age five. Supporters emphasize that the books play an important role in promoting early literacy and fostering a lifelong love of reading.
