BOISE. ID – Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador issued a fraud and safety alert on April 30, warning residents about a deceptive door-to-door sales tactic being reported across the state. According to the alert, individuals posing as government representatives have been approaching homes and falsely claiming to offer official inspections and free energy efficiency or weatherization audits.

The Attorney General emphasized that there are no government programs of this nature currently operating in Idaho.

“As warmer weather arrives this summer, more door-to-door sales activity is expected across Idaho,” Labrador stated. “Most businesses operate honestly, but consumers should always be cautious of scams and bad actors. You should never feel obligated to let a stranger into your home without verifying who they are.”

The alert advises Idahoans to verify the credentials of any individual offering goods or services at their door. Many local jurisdictions in Idaho require salespeople to carry a permit, which must be shown upon request. Those who cannot provide a permit should be reported to the appropriate city or county authorities.

Consumers who believe they have been subject to misleading sales practices are encouraged to file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division through the online Consumer Complaint Form. The Division offers an informal dispute resolution process, though it does not have the authority to compel businesses to act.

Residents may also report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
