OROFINO, ID — Voters in Clearwater County will decide on May 20 whether to approve a permanent levy increase to support the Clearwater County Ambulance District’s emergency medical services.
The district, established in 1990, currently operates on its original funding model, which was designed to support a volunteer-based service. According to the district, this model has never been adjusted through a levy increase since its inception. However, rising operational costs and the need for full-time staff have prompted the district to request additional funding.
Officials say the current funding structure only provides about 20% of the annual operating budget through property tax revenue. The rest comes from transport fees, grants, and donations.

The proposed levy would allow the district to continue offering advanced life support paramedic services and meet minimum staffing requirements.
If the levy fails, the district warns it may face staff shortages and would need to restructure its services, potentially affecting its ability to provide paramedic-level care.
Residents with questions about the proposal can contact the ambulance district’s main office at 208-476-3771 or visit the Orofino station at 1195 Riverside Avenue.
