Governor Proclaims May as Wildfire Awareness Month in Idaho

BOISE, ID – As Idaho prepares for the upcoming fire season, Governor Brad Little has officially proclaimed May as Wildfire Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of wildfire prevention and preparedness across the state.

In collaboration with state, federal, tribal, and local partners, the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) will lead efforts throughout the month to educate residents on reducing wildfire risk. The department plans to share daily safety tips and resources on its social media platforms and encourages Idahoans to take proactive measures to protect homes, families, and communities.

“There’s no better time than now for Idahoans to learn how to reduce the risk of wildfire and take action to protect what matters most,” said Governor Little.

IDL Director Dustin Miller highlighted the statewide threat of wildfire, noting, “Fire is part of the Idaho landscape, but it doesn’t recognize boundaries. It will race across forests, fields and neighborhoods without hesitation.”

Jennifer Russell, IDL fire prevention officer, stressed the value of education in reducing human-caused fires, while Tyler Holfeltz, IDL mitigation program manager, noted that creating defensible space is one of the most effective ways to protect property.

IDL also reminded the public to take personal responsibility while recreating on state and public lands to help preserve Idaho’s natural resources for future generations.

Residents can visit www.idl.idaho.gov to track active wildfires and sign up for alerts. The department urges everyone to stay informed and prepared as fire season approaches.
