SPIRIT LAKE, ID – A two-vehicle crash on State Highway 54 Friday night resulted in the death of a Spirit Lake woman, according to authorities.

The Idaho State Police and Spirit Lake Police Department are investigating the fatal collision, which occurred around 11:40 PM at the intersection of State Highway 54 and Coeur d’Alene Drive in Kootenai County.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2022 Honda motorcycle, driven by a 61-year-old female from Spirit Lake, was traveling westbound on SH 54 when it was struck by a 2014 Subaru SUV. The Subaru, driven by a 23-year-old male from Spirit Lake, had been traveling eastbound on SH 54 and failed to yield the right of way. As he attempted to make a left turn onto northbound Coeur d’Alene Drive, the Subaru collided with the motorcycle.

The driver of the Subaru, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was uninjured. However, the motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Traffic on SH 54 was blocked for approximately two hours while emergency crews responded. The Idaho State Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, though the investigation is ongoing.

The Kootenai County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. The office will also determine the cause and manner of death.

The Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.
