Dozens Arrested After Pro-Palestinian Protesters Occupy University of Washington Building

SEATTLE, WA – More than two dozen individuals were arrested late Monday following a protest that took over the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building at the University of Washington. The demonstration, organized by the activist group Super UW, was staged in opposition to the university’s connection with Boeing—a company the group claims contributes to violence against Palestinians through its military contracts.

According to a statement from university officials, demonstrators blocked entrances to the building and started fires in dumpsters outside, creating what the university described as unsafe conditions for the campus community. University of Washington Police, working with other law enforcement agencies, began clearing the area around 10:30 p.m. and entered the building by 11 p.m.

Roughly 30 protesters were taken into custody on charges that include trespassing, property damage, disorderly conduct, and conspiracy. Students identified among those arrested will be referred to the school’s disciplinary office, according to university authorities.

The building at the center of the protest, which opened in 2024, cost over $100 million and was partially funded by private donations—including $10 million from Boeing. The donation has made the site a symbolic target for students calling for divestment from defense contractors. Protesters are also demanding the building be renamed in honor of Shaban al-Dalou, a Palestinian engineering student who died in Gaza.

In a separate statement, the university criticized an antisemitic post made by a suspended student group earlier in the day, reiterating its stance against all forms of hate. Officials said they would not tolerate disruptions that threaten campus safety.

The university has not indicated any intention to sever ties with Boeing or to rename the building. Investigations into Monday’s events are ongoing.
