BOISE, ID – Starting Saturday, May 10, Idaho residents will be required to obtain burn permits for debris burning, with the permit period running through October 20. Permits are available through the Idaho Department of Lands and can be accessed online at http://burnpermits.idaho.gov or by visiting a local IDL office.
The public is also urged to check for local burn bans, which may be in effect in some counties. Local fire departments or sheriff’s offices can provide updated information on restrictions.
In addition to state requirements, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Idaho has implemented the 2025 Fire Prevention Order. Effective from May 10 through October 20, the order prohibits several fire-related activities on BLM-managed public lands. Under the order, the following are banned:
-
Possession or use of fireworks
-
Use of exploding targets
-
Use of steel component or tracer ammunition
-
Shooting at steel or ferrous targets
-
Burning of explosive materials
The order was signed by BLM Idaho Acting State Director June Shoemaker in an effort to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires as fire season approaches.
Officials encourage all Idahoans to “Learn to Burn Safely” and take extra precautions during this period of heightened fire danger.
