Search Underway for Suspect who Shot at Deputies With an AR-15 in Western Washington

OLYMPIA, WA – Authorities are searching for a suspect who reportedly shot at deputies with an AR-15 during a pursuit in western Washington on Thursday.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies in the Olympia area were alerted to a wanted felon, 27-year-old Damien Madison, traveling from Grays Harbor County into Thurston County.  A deputy located the suspect vehicle in the Tenino area, south of Olympia, and initiated a traffic stop.  The vehicle initially pulled over but then fled, leading deputies on a pursuit out of Tenino along Highway 507.

The pursuit continued onto Military Road, where the vehicle’s occupants began throwing objects at the pursuing deputy. As the pursuit turned onto Waldrick Road SE, the male passenger, identified as Madison, fired multiple shots at deputies from an AR-15 and threw a firearm from the vehicle. One patrol car was struck multiple times by gunfire and disabled.

The fleeing vehicle eventually came to a stop after nearly crashing. Upon contact, deputies discovered Madison had fled on foot, and the female driver was taken into custody.

The Washington State Patrol, King County’s Guardian 1 helicopter, and a K9 unit all began to search for Madison, but he was not located.  As of Friday morning, he remained at large. He is wanted on felony warrants and for shooting at law enforcement. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Despite being fired upon, no deputies were injured, and no law enforcement personnel discharged their firearms during the incident.
