Idaho Gas Prices Dip Slightly Ahead of Memorial Day Travel Surge

BOISE, ID – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Idaho drivers are seeing a slight reprieve at the gas pump—though experts warn the dip may be short-lived.

According to AAA Idaho, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the state is $3.28, down half a cent from last week, five cents lower than a month ago, and 57 cents cheaper than this time last year. In comparison, the national average sits at $3.18 per gallon, marking a four-cent increase from the previous week.

“Things have been pretty quiet at Idaho gas stations in recent weeks,” said AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “But a record 45.1 million Americans are expected to travel for Memorial Day, including a record 39.4 million by car. We expect a surge in gasoline demand that could be felt when drivers stop to fill up over the next few days.”

Despite the recent dip, Idaho still ranks as the tenth most expensive state for fuel, trailing behind California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Alaska, Arizona, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.

Crude oil prices remain relatively low, with West Texas Intermediate trading near $63 per barrel. That’s up slightly from last week but still $16 less than a year ago, helping to ease pump prices for the time being.

AAA encourages motorists to take advantage of fuel reward programs through credit cards and grocery stores to help offset holiday travel costs.

Here are average fuel prices in select Idaho cities as of May 19:

  • Boise: $3.19

  • Coeur d’Alene: $3.33

  • Franklin: $3.28

  • Idaho Falls: $3.20

  • Lewiston: $3.36

  • Pocatello: $3.22

  • Rexburg: $3.26

  • Twin Falls: $3.30
