OROFINO, ID – Voters in Clearwater County have approved a permanent EMS levy increase, providing critical funding for ambulance staffing and emergency medical services across the region.

The measure passed during the May 20 election with 66.81% voter approval, marking the first funding increase since the Clearwater County Ambulance District was established in 1990. The district, originally structured for a volunteer-based response model, has faced rising costs as it transitions to a full-time staffing approach to meet growing service demands.

Darren Smith, Ambulance Director for the district, thanked residents for their support, stating that the approved funding will be instrumental in maintaining reliable ambulance coverage and the delivery of life-saving care. “Your support ensures that we can continue to provide high-quality prehospital care to both residents and visitors of Clearwater County,” Smith said in a public message.

The ambulance district is an independent taxing entity, generating only about 20% of its operating budget through levies, with the remainder coming from transport fees, grants, and donations. The increased levy is expected to help the district meet minimum staffing requirements and maintain advanced life support paramedic services.
