26-Year-Old WSU Student Stands Trial This Week For Allegedly Raping Female Student On Campus

COLFAX, WA – A 26-year-old Washington State University student is standing trial this week for allegedly raping a female student on campus.

Erick Leal is charged with felony 2nd degree and 3rd degree rape in Whitman County Superior Court. Jury selection began Tuesday morning in Colfax.

Leal is accused of raping the woman while the two were drinking at his apartment on campus in April of last year. The alleged victim told WSU Police that she passed out and woke up to Leal sexually assaulting her. Leal reportedly had his hand on the women’s throat and she told officers she thought she was going to die.

According to court documents, Leal allegedly admitted to the rape during a phone call with the woman that was recorded by police. Officers received Whitman County Superior Court permission to record the call. Leal told WSU Police that the sex was consensual.

Leal is still listed as a WSU student on the institution’s website.
