Idaho Begins Firing Squad Retrofit at Maximum Security Prison

KUNA, ID – The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) has announced it will begin phase two of the retrofit of F-Block at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution to accommodate executions by firing squad, as required by House Bill 37.

The law, which designates firing squad as the state’s primary method of execution starting July 1, 2026, has prompted the department to modify the existing execution unit accordingly. The estimated timeframe for completing the retrofit is six to nine months.

Once construction is complete, the execution team will undergo training to ensure readiness for carrying out executions using the new method. The department stated it is confident the project will meet both the timeline and budget requirements.

As of May 23, 2025, F-Block has been taken offline due to construction. During this period, all executions and execution-related procedures—including those involving lethal injection—will be unavailable.
