BOISE, ID – With the return of summer weather, drivers in remote areas of Idaho may find themselves unexpectedly sharing the road with massive swarms of crickets. AAA is reminding motorists to prepare their vehicles and stay alert as swarming insects can pose safety risks.
“It’s an impressive sight, to say the least,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “But thousands upon thousands of crickets scampering about on the road can be a little disconcerting. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to navigate both the swarm itself and the aftermath.”
AAA recommends the following tips to help drivers safely navigate through cricket or cicada activity:
- Check washer fluid and wipers: Top off windshield washer fluid before travel and ensure wiper blades are in good condition to maintain visibility.
- Wash and wax your vehicle: A protective coat of wax can shield your car’s paint from the acidity of crushed insects.
- Inspect air filters: Periodically check both the engine air filter and the cabin air filter for any blockages or debris.
- Watch engine temperature: Monitor your temperature gauge. If it rises unexpectedly, check for insect-related blockages under the hood.
- Adjust driving behavior: Swarms can make roads slick. Slow down and avoid sudden turns, acceleration, or braking when encountering large groups of bugs.
AAA encourages drivers to take preventative measures before venturing into rural or high-risk areas during peak insect activity to minimize the impact of summer swarms on travel.
