AAA Survey Finds Declining Interest in Electric Vehicles Amid Cost and Charging Concerns

BOISE, ID — Interest in purchasing electric vehicles (EVs) appears to be waning among American drivers, according to new research from AAA. Only 16% of U.S. adults surveyed said they are likely or very likely to buy an EV as their next vehicle, despite a growing number of models on the market.

AAA Idaho Public Affairs Director Matthew Conde said major barriers include the initial purchase price and high battery replacement costs. Other concerns include range anxiety and limited access to public charging infrastructure.

“Some people also have lingering concerns about EV range and a lack of convenient public charging stations,” said Conde. “As prospective EV owners gain more knowledge and personal experience, many of these concerns may subside over time.”

To address infrastructure needs, AAA has installed DC fast charging capabilities at its Boise Service Center and at several locations along Oregon’s I-5 corridor. The AAA Mobile App also includes features to help users find charging and fuel stations nearby.

Consumer sentiment has also shifted about the future of EVs. In 2022, 40% of respondents believed most vehicles would be electric within 10 years. This year, that number has dropped to 23%.

AAA points out that while EVs tend to cost more upfront, they generally require less maintenance and use electricity, one of the lowest-cost fuels.

Some drivers are adopting a “hybrid garage” approach — owning both an EV for short trips and a gas-powered vehicle for longer distances. Hybrids continue to be seen as a practical compromise.

AAA offers additional EV-related resources including an online car guide, driving cost calculator, and EV research at AAA.com/charge.

AAA Idaho is part of AAA Oregon/Idaho, serving 900,000 members with travel, insurance, financial, and automotive services. AAA represents more than 63 million motorists across North America.
