Man Found With Cocaine, Meth, Ecstasy, and Gun During Coeur d’Alene Traffic Stop Sentenced to 10 Years

COEUR D’ALENE, ID — Donovan James Erickson, 31, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of Possession of Cocaine With Intent to Deliver and Resisting and Obstructing Officers, following a December 2024 traffic stop in which he was found with drugs and a firearm.

Erickson was a passenger during the stop and was not wearing a seatbelt. He initially refused to identify himself, and officers later discovered an active warrant for his arrest. Upon taking him into custody, officers found nearly an ounce of cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy, a scale with empty baggies, and a handgun in his possession.

Possession of Cocaine With Intent to Deliver is a felony punishable by up to life in prison. The misdemeanor charge of Resisting and Obstructing Officers carries a penalty of up to one year in jail.

On June 2, 2025, District Judge Lamont Berecz sentenced Erickson to 10 years in prison with parole eligibility after three years for the felony charge. He was given credit for time served—nearly six months—for the misdemeanor offense.

Erickson has a prior criminal history that includes convictions for theft, criminal mischief, criminal conspiracy, assault, and probation violation. He also faces pending charges in Deschutes County, Oregon, for assault and unlawful use of a deadly weapon.

Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Stanley T. Mortensen credited the Coeur d’Alene Police Department for its role in the investigation.
