Consultant Study Finds WSU Athletics Economic Impact Worth 750 Million Dollars Annually

PULLMAN, WA – A consultant has found that the economic impact of Washington State University Athletics is worth hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

WSU Athletics hired Collegiate Consulting in January. The firm spent four months analyzing the value of Cougar Athletics. The consultants presented the results of their study to the WSU Regents during their special meeting Thursday morning.

The study looked at the three fiscal years between 2021 and 2024. Cougar home games and athletic events like camps generated 183 million dollars for the Pullman economy over the past three fiscal years. The economic impact of athletics department staff and student athletes spending totaled 253 million dollars during that time. The direct revenue impact of Cougar Athletics during the three years was nearly 300 million dollars.

The consultants examined the advertising value of Cougar Athletics games on TV, streaming and social media exposure. The report finds that the advertising value of the exposure totaled 1.5 billion dollars over three years. The consultants concluded that the total economic impact from Cougar Athletics from fiscal years 2021 to 2024 was nearly 2.3 billion dollars.
