LEWISTON, ID – The Alice Whitman Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the Lewiston Elks Lodge Number 896, located at 3444 Country Club Drive.
The ceremony is open to the public and will honor the history of the United States flag and provide a respectful retirement for flags that are faded, torn, or otherwise unserviceable. Following the ceremony, the retired flags will be taken to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for proper disposal by burning at a later date.
Immediately after the flag retirement, a Quilts of Valor presentation will take place. Quilts made by the Lewis Clark Quilts of Valor group will be awarded to local service members and veterans from all military branches. Each quilt is handmade to offer comfort and appreciation to those who have been touched by war, symbolizing respect, healing, and gratitude.
In preparation for the ceremony, the Alice Whitman Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lewiston Elks Lodge Number 896 are collecting worn American flags for retirement. Flags may be dropped off at the Elks Lodge Tuesday through Friday, or at …and BOOKS, too! from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Flag Day, recognized each year on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States by the Continental Congress in 1777. Although not a federal holiday, Flag Day is officially recognized in Pennsylvania, and Americans are encouraged to display the United States flag during National Flag Week.
