Tips to Avoid a Breakdown from an Overheating Car
BOISE, ID – As summer temperatures rise and road trip season begins, AAA is reminding drivers to take precautions against vehicle overheating, which can quickly derail travel plans and cause costly damage.
“An overheated engine can warp metal components and lead to serious mechanical issues,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “Just like people, cars don’t perform well in extreme heat.”
AAA advises motorists to:
- Inspect your cooling system before hitting the road, including coolant levels and hose condition.
- Monitor your temperature gauge closely—readings above the ¾ mark indicate overheating.
- Pull over immediately if you see steam or hear hissing. Raise your hood cautiously and move to a safe distance.
- Carry extra water for both your radiator and any passengers or pets.
- Never remove a hot radiator cap—wait at least 20 minutes before doing so.
- Keep a towel or blanket in the car in case you need to kneel on hot pavement.
“If your vehicle is heavily loaded or you’re climbing hills, be extra cautious,” Conde added. “You can even turn on the heater to help draw heat away from the engine block and buy yourself time to reach a safer location.”
