COEUR D’ALENE, ID — The Idaho Transportation Board has identified the I-90 and US-95 interchange in Coeur d’Alene for future design and construction funding, following the passage of House Bill 25 earlier this year. The decision came during the board’s regular monthly meeting as part of ongoing efforts to relieve congestion and expand major corridors across the state.
The funding, provided through the Transportation Expansion and Congestion Mitigation (TECM) program, is supported by an additional $20 million per year for the next three years. This increase allows the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to invest up to $1 billion in infrastructure improvements statewide.
The I-90/US-95 interchange project will add capacity to accommodate projected traffic volumes, which are expected to double by 2045. Planned improvements are also intended to reduce safety concerns, including the elimination of off-ramp queues that back up onto the interstate.
Prior to this legislative funding, the project lacked construction resources. With this update, construction could begin as soon as 2027.
The project is now included in the draft Idaho Transportation Investment Program (ITIP) for 2026–2032. A public comment period is scheduled for July, with final board approval expected in September.
The announcement is part of a broader investment strategy targeting high-priority corridors. In North Idaho, TECM funding also supported an early start to the I-90/State Highway 41 interchange project in 2022 and will enable the expansion of I-90 to four lanes in both directions between SH-41 and US-95 starting this summer.
