LEWISTON, ID — The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public warning after a citizen reported receiving a fraudulent phone call from an individual posing as a deputy.
According to the June 12 release, the caller falsely identified themselves as “Deputy Dan Brown” with Whitman County, claiming the recipient had missed a court date and would need to pay $2,000 to avoid arrest. The caller ID reportedly displayed as the Whitman County Courthouse.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that law enforcement will never contact individuals to advise of warrants or request payment through gift cards, Apple Pay, cryptocurrency, or other non-traditional methods.
Residents are urged to remain cautious and report suspicious activity.
