Idaho State Police Warn of Scam Targeting Drivers at Gas Stations and Along Highways

BOISE, ID – Idaho State Police have issued a warning about a growing scam targeting drivers along highway and at gas stations. Scammers are reportedly posing as stranded motorists, claiming they are in urgent need of help.

In these incidents, individuals may tell drivers that their credit cards aren’t working, they need gas, or they are in a desperate situation. Often, the scammers offer to sell what appears to be valuable jewelry or other goods in exchange for cash. However, authorities warn that the jewelry is fake, and the entire situation is a scam designed to take advantage of good Samaritans.

On Friday, near Nampa, a Good Samaritan encountered one of these scammers but wisely recognized something was off and chose not to give money.

Idaho State Police are urging drivers to stay vigilant and cautious if approached by individuals in similar circumstances. If you suspect a scam, it is advised to report the incident to local authorities and avoid engaging with the person.
