OLYMPIA, WA – As the Fourth of July approaches, the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly and follow local laws when purchasing and using fireworks.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Courtney Chambers stresses the importance of knowing the legal dates and times when fireworks may be sold or discharged. While statewide regulations set general allowances, local jurisdictions may enforce stricter rules or total bans due to fire risk or public safety concerns.
Below are the legally permitted dates and times for the sale and discharge of fireworks in Washington:
Date | Sales Allowed | Discharge Allowed |
---|---|---|
June 28 | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. | 12:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. |
June 29 – July 3 | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. |
July 4 | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. (midnight) |
July 5 | Sales Prohibited | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. |
Residents are urged to confirm local rules with their city or county fire officials, as some areas may restrict or ban fireworks altogether.
Officials also caution that fireworks-related injuries and property damage are common around the holiday. They encourage people to consider attending a public fireworks display conducted by licensed professionals instead of lighting fireworks at home.
