IDAHO COUNTY, ID – Firefighting efforts continue to intensify at the Post Fire burning in the Nez Perce–Clearwater National Forests, with 317 personnel now assigned to the incident. The fire remains at 151 acres and is 0% contained.
Located 14 miles west of Powell Junction along the north side of U.S. Highway 12, the fire is burning in steep and rocky terrain near Post Office Creek. Crews are working to protect the highway corridor, nearby hot springs, recreational areas, and Forest infrastructure.
As of Tuesday morning, hotshot crews have completed direct line construction along the fire’s west edge. A water handling system is being installed to assist with mop-up operations around the northeast spot fire. Burning snags along the middle spot fire continue to pose a risk of rolling debris toward Highway 12, prompting the use of helicopter bucket drops on Monday to cool those areas.
Firefighters are also patrolling the fire’s perimeter for residual heat, and sawyers are actively removing hazardous snags. Officials urge travelers not to stop along Highway 12 to observe suppression efforts, as doing so can interfere with emergency access and pose safety risks.
Fire behavior remains moderate. Warm, dry conditions and gusty westerly winds are expected to persist through Thursday. While light showers were reported Monday, lower elevations still reached 86°F, with humidity levels forecast at 22% today. Heavy downed fuels are the primary driver of fire activity, and isolated torching may continue as temperatures stay elevated.
A temporary flight restriction is in effect within a seven-mile radius of the fire. Highway 12 remains open, and there are currently no Forest closures.
