PULLMAN, WA – Washington State University Athletics is eliminating some track and field sports.
Cougar Athletics issued a statement on Monday announcing that the department is cutting WSU track’s jumping and throwing programs. Sprint and hurdle opportunities at WSU are being limited.
The move shifts Cougar track to a focus on distance events. Cougar Athletics will honor the scholarships of impacted student athletes who stay at WSU. The Lewiston Tribune reports that three Cougar track coaches lost their jobs on Monday.
The decision comes after the WSU Regents cut the Cougar Athletic Department’s budget by 4% equaling three million dollars. The elimination of the field events is the first time that WSU sports have been cut since the collapse of the Pac-12 conference two years ago.
