WSU Regents Approve $25M for Heald Hall Demolition, New Sciences Building Prep

PULLMAN, WA – Washington State University’s Pullman campus is preparing for a major transformation along its Sciences Corridor. At its June 2025 meeting, the WSU Board of Regents approved $25 million for the demolition of Heald Hall and site preparation for a new Sciences Building, marking the beginning of a multi-year overhaul of aging research facilities.

The demolition of Heald Hall—built in 1967 and long overdue for replacement—will make way for a state-of-the-art facility to support the College of Arts and Sciences’ research and teaching missions. Site work and demolition are scheduled to begin in April 2026 and conclude by June 2027.

Plans for the new Sciences Building, while still under development, envision a flexible, modular facility designed to accommodate both current and future research needs. A predesign report completed by architectural firm Gensler outlined a 10-year roadmap that includes consolidating biological sciences and chemistry labs into a modern, adaptable space.

Heald Hall is part of a group of core science buildings on NE College Avenue—along with Abelson, Eastlick, Fulmer, and Webster Halls—that together carry nearly $100 million in deferred maintenance costs. According to university documents, the new building is expected to relieve long-standing infrastructure constraints and improve the university’s ability to attract research funding, faculty, and students.

The preferred site option would allow for direct connections to neighboring Eastlick and Abelson Halls and preserve existing utilities, while replacing Heald Hall with a new facility offering up to five floors of laboratory, office, and collaboration space.

Final designs and the total scope of the project are still to be determined. WSU intends to use a design-build approach to streamline construction and adapt to budget and market conditions.
