WASHINGTON, D.C. – FreshRealm is recalling multiple varieties of its ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo meals sold at Kroger and Walmart stores nationwide after an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to the products has sickened at least 17 people in 13 states, federal officials said Tuesday.
The voluntary recall, announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), includes all affected items produced before June 17, 2025. The recall comes as federal health investigators continue to trace the source of contamination, which has already been linked to three deaths and one fetal loss.
The recalled products were manufactured at FreshRealm facilities in San Clemente, California; Montezuma, Georgia; and Indianapolis, Indiana. The outbreak strain of Listeria was found during routine testing in March 2025, although that particular product batch was destroyed before reaching stores. Still, FSIS says subsequent tracing of consumer purchase records and interviews with sick individuals tied multiple cases to FreshRealm’s chicken fettuccine alfredo meals.
Recalled Products
The products under recall include:
-
32.8 oz. “Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine” with a best-by date of June 27, 2025, or earlier.
-
12.3 oz. “Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine, Broccoli” with a best-by date of June 26, 2025, or earlier.
-
12.5 oz. “Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo” with a best-by date of June 19, 2025, or earlier.
All recalled packages bear the USDA inspection mark and one of the following establishment numbers: EST. P-50784, EST. P-47770, or EST. P-47718.
Ongoing Investigation
Although the contaminated batch identified in March never left the facility, further investigation has not yet pinpointed the exact ingredient responsible for the outbreak. “FSIS is sharing what is currently known… as the agency continues to work with public health partners,” the agency said in a statement.
According to FSIS, the illnesses span from August 2024 through May 2025. Some cases were confirmed through laboratory analysis, while others were traced based on purchase records or consumer interviews describing their meals in detail.
Health Risks
Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious infection especially hazardous to older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, confusion, and gastrointestinal distress. In pregnant women, listeriosis can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe illness in newborns.
FSIS urges consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers immediately and discard or return any recalled products. “Do not eat these meals,” the agency warned. “If you are in a high-risk group and develop flu-like symptoms after eating these products, seek medical care immediately.”
Consumers with questions about the recall can contact FSIS or FreshRealm directly for more information.
