Senate Approves Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization; House Consideration Pending

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed S. 356, a bill to reauthorize the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Program (SRS) through Fiscal Year 2026. The legislation now awaits consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Secure Rural Schools program, originally established in 2000, provides financial support to rural counties containing federally owned lands, which are not subject to local property taxes. These funds are used for local schools, road maintenance, law enforcement, and other essential services.

The bill was introduced by Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), and Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon). Supporters argue that reauthorization is essential for counties that depend on the program as a substitute for declining federal timber revenues.

In a joint statement, the senators emphasized the importance of restoring a financial lifeline for rural communities. Senator Crapo noted the program’s role in supporting emergency services and education in areas affected by limited tax revenue. Senator Wyden described the passage as an urgently needed step for counties long dependent on these funds. Risch highlighted the program’s necessity until timber revenues can be restored, while Merkley pointed to its impact on services like schools, libraries, and emergency response.

The measure received bipartisan support, with additional co-sponsors from across the country. Although the Senate had previously passed a version of the bill in 2024, the House did not take action before the end of the session.

Senators are now calling on the House of Representatives to act quickly to prevent a lapse in funding that could affect rural counties nationwide.
