Kraft Heinz to Eliminate FD&C Colors from U.S. Products by 2027

CHICAGO, IL – The Kraft Heinz Company announced Tuesday that it will fully remove Food, Drug & Cosmetic (FD&C) colors from all its U.S. products by the end of 2027 and has immediately ceased launching any new U.S. products that contain these artificial dyes.

Currently, nearly 90 percent of Kraft Heinz’s U.S. product portfolio—measured by net sales—is already free of FD&C colors. The company stated that for the small remainder of products containing the dyes, it has developed a “3Rs” strategy: removing the dyes where possible, replacing them with natural alternatives, or reinventing product colors where direct substitutes are unavailable.

Pedro Navio, North America President at Kraft Heinz, emphasized the brand’s ongoing efforts to improve nutritional quality. “We are continuously evolving our recipes, products, and portfolio to deliver superiority to consumers,” said Navio. “We removed artificial colors, preservatives, and flavors from Kraft Mac & Cheese in 2016, and Heinz Ketchup has never contained artificial dyes.”

FD&C colors, though approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, have been used in a limited number of Kraft Heinz products. The company also plans to collaborate with licensees to remove these colors from branded products not directly under its control.

This announcement is part of Kraft Heinz’s broader commitment to nutrition and sustainability. The company has reformulated over 1,000 recipes in recent years to reduce sugar, salt, and saturated fat, while increasing protein and fiber. It projects a reduction of nearly 55 million pounds of sugar from its product lines by the end of 2025.
