Trump Administration Cuts LGBTQ+ Funding for 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump administration has pulled federal funding designed to provide specialized support for LGBTQ+ individuals through the 988 suicide prevention hotline. The move has been condemned by mental health advocates, LGBTQ+ groups, and lawmakers, who warn that it could deepen the crisis for a population already at higher risk for mental health issues.

The 988 hotline, which launched in 2022, was created as a nationwide mental health resource, offering free and confidential crisis intervention for anyone in need.

Effective July 17, 2025, funding for LGBTQ+ youth–specific support (“Press 3” option) will end. This service connected callers to resources like the Trevor Project. Though 988 will remain available, this loss could significantly impact LGBTQ+ youth who relied on specialized support. The Trevor Project will continue to be a resource, just not through 988.
