WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump on Friday called for a special prosecutor to investigate the 2020 presidential election, which he alleges was marred by fraud.
Trump has for years claimed that he lost the 2020 election to former President Joe Biden because of electoral fraud in the election. None of those claims were substantiated. Some of Trump’s allies were later convicted of crimes related to their disputes over the outcome of the election.
“Biden was grossly incompetent, and the 2020 election was a total FRAUD! The evidence is MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Friday morning. “A Special Prosecutor must be appointed. This cannot be allowed to happen again in the United States of America! Let the work begin!”
Trump allies filed multiple lawsuits after the 2020 election, all of which were dismissed by courts. Georgia conducted an audit of its 2020 results and found no evidence of fraud that would have altered the outcome.
Even after his loss, Trump tried to cling to power, which ultimately led to his split with former Vice President Mike Pence, who declined Trump’s request to stop the certification of Biden’s win. That led to destructive protests by Trump supporters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. After Trump won the 2024 election, he pardoned those convicted of crimes on Jan. 6.
