Fatal Crash Follows Gunfire Report near Campground in Southern Idaho

CASSIA COUNTY, ID – The Idaho State Police (ISP) is investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Tuesday morning following a pursuit connected to gunfire reports near the Sublett Campground.

According to a corrected news release from ISP, the incident began just after midnight on June 24, when the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance in locating a suspect who had reportedly fired multiple gunshots in a remote campground area.

Deputies and ISP troopers located a 2005 Volvo XC90 believed to be involved, but as a deputy approached, the vehicle fled at high speed. A pursuit ensued, but law enforcement lost sight of the SUV due to poor visibility caused by dust and high speeds.

Shortly afterward, officers discovered the suspect’s vehicle had crashed and rolled. The driver was found nearby, and troopers began life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers recovered a loaded rifle and shotgun from the vehicle, as well as ammunition without an associated firearm. The Cassia County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and will release the deceased individual’s identity and cause of death following an investigation.

The Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office is handling the crash investigation, while ISP is overseeing the overall inquiry into the pursuit. The firearms have been secured and impounded by the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation remains ongoing.
