SPOKANE, WA – Drivers traveling through downtown Spokane this weekend should prepare for delays and road closures as thousands of players and spectators converge for the annual Hoopfest event, taking place June 27–29.

The tournament, recognized as one of the largest 3-on-3 basketball events in the country, will lead to extensive traffic impacts in the Spokane area. According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), roadways in and around downtown—including Interstate 90, State Route 2, State Route 195, and Division Street (SR 395)—will be especially affected.

Many downtown streets will be closed to accommodate the tournament, and traffic congestion is expected. Travelers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

The Washington State Patrol will conduct traffic safety emphasis patrols in coordination with local agencies, including the Spokane Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, and Spokane Valley Police Department. These patrols aim to deter speeding, impaired driving, and other collision-causing violations.

Aviation units will be deployed over the city to support ground patrols, with night operations aided by FLIR (Forward-Looking Infrared) technology for impaired driver detection. Additional motorcycle troopers will patrol I-90 throughout the weekend.

The WSP’s Mobile Impaired Driving Unit will also be stationed at the Spokane Convention Center to process drivers suspected of impairment.

Officials urge attendees and commuters to plan ahead, drive sober, and follow posted traffic directions to ensure a safe Hoopfest weekend.
