Road Construction to Limit Travel in Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests

KAMIAH, ID — Two key access roads in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests will undergo significant repairs this summer, with closures and detours expected to affect recreational access and travel times for forest visitors.

Beginning June 23, road crews will address a rockslide that has limited access along the 250 Road near Black Canyon on the North Fork of the Clearwater River. The slide area currently allows limited passage for high-clearance vehicles and offers a detour route via the 255 Road, but full repair work is necessary to restore safe travel.

Crews will work Monday through Thursday, June 23–26, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with four-hour closures expected during active work hours. The effort is intended to improve both public access and support for firefighting efforts in the area, according to North Fork District Ranger Andrew Skowlund.

Later this summer, a separate project will begin on the 247 Road near Headquarters, Idaho. Starting July 7, the Potlatch-Deltic Corporation will lead reconstruction work on the roadway, prompting a closure to all but industrial and administrative traffic. A detour using the Brown’s Rock route will be in place, adding an estimated 30 to 40 minutes of travel time between Headquarters and the Aquarius Campground.

Roadwork on the 247 Road is expected to continue through the end of August.

“We recognize the impact that this project will have on one of our most cherished recreation areas this summer and advise patience and caution for forest visitors,” said Ranger Skowlund, who also noted that both projects are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and infrastructure throughout the forest system.
