Mother Arrested for Helping Son Flee After Fatal Shooting of Spokane 13-Year-Old

SPOKANE, WA – Detectives with the Spokane Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit (MCU) have arrested a second individual in connection with the January 25 shooting death of 13-year-old Gavin Looper.

On June 26, 2025, detectives took Becky A. Gibbs, 49, into custody on suspicion of Rendering Criminal Assistance in the First Degree. Investigators allege Gibbs, the mother of shooting suspect Glen Dylan Burkey, helped her son leave the state following the incident.

Gibbs is currently being held at the Spokane County Jail.

Burkey was located a few days after the shooting in Missoula, Montana. He was extradited to Washington State and remains in custody on multiple charges, including First Degree Murder.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of January 25 in the 2800 block of East Heroy Avenue. Burkey, 25, was identified by police as the suspect in what investigators say was not a random act. At the time, detectives had established probable cause to arrest Burkey for Second Degree Murder, Drive-By Shooting, and Second Degree Assault.
