UPDATE: June 29, 2025, 4:27 p.m. Sheriff Confirms Firefighters Injured in Canfield Mountain Incident, Suspect Still at Large

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that wildland firefighters were injured after shots were fired on Canfield Mountain around 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Fire crews had initially responded to a wildfire at approximately 1:30 p.m., and law enforcement was called shortly after gunfire was reported.

Authorities say the suspect remains at large, and the situation is still considered active. Residents in the area have been instructed to shelter in place. There is also an active fire continuing to burn on Canfield Mountain.

A press briefing is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Fire Station #3, located at 1500 N 15th Street in Coeur d’Alene.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert just minutes ago urging residents to avoid the Coeur d’Alene area due to an active shooter situation. The suspect remains at large. Authorities are asking the public not to call the Sheriff’s Office and to follow official updates on Facebook as the situation develops.

COEUR D’ALENE, ID – Kootenai County Emergency Management has issued a shelter-in-place order for residents near the Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road due to an ongoing law enforcement response. The public is being urged to avoid the area entirely.

As of Sunday afternoon, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that multiple wildland firefighters have been injured while responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain. Authorities have identified this as an active shooter incident. The conditions of the injured personnel have not been disclosed at this time.

“This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,” said Idaho Governor Brad Little. “I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more. Teresa and I are heartbroken.”

Congressman Mike Simpson also responded, saying, “Gut-wrenching news coming from Coeur d’Alene. As the situation develops, our thoughts and prayers are with the brave firefighters and all first responders on the scene.”

Officials continue to stress that this is not a drill and encourage the public to stay away from the area for their safety and the safety of emergency responders. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
