Sunken Vessel Response Underway Near Miller Island on Columbia River

MARYHILL, WA — Response efforts are underway following a sunken vessel incident in the Columbia River near the northeast end of Miller Island at Hells Gate Canyon, reported around 4:21 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Washington Department of Ecology, three individuals on board were able to self-rescue and are unharmed. A light sheen has been observed on the water, indicating a minor fuel or oil release.

The navigation channel is partially obstructed due to the presence of response equipment. Boaters in the area are advised to use caution.

Ecology officials say they are working with the vessel owner and coordinating with local, federal, and Tribal partners. A contractor has been deployed to secure the vessel, place protective boom, and determine next steps for safely offloading any remaining fuel or oil.
