Two Firefighters Killed After Taking Gunfire in Canfield Mountain Wildfire Response

Kootenai County authorities have confirmed that SWAT team members located a deceased male on Canfield Mountain earlier this evening. A firearm was found nearby. The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted.

Meanwhile, fire crews continue to respond to the Nettleton Gulch Fire on Canfield Mountain, which remains active. First reported around 1:40 p.m., the fire is estimated at 15 to 20 acres and is burning in steep terrain with numerous snags. Due to safety concerns during the earlier law enforcement operation, firefighters were not able to access the fire until approximately 7:30 p.m.

Additional firefighting resources—including aircraft, engines, hand crews, water tenders, and heavy equipment—are expected to arrive and continue work on the fire Monday. The Idaho Department of Lands is investigating the cause of the fire.

Residents are urged to remain alert as firefighting operations continue and conditions may change.

UPDATE – 7:00 p.m., June 29, 2025:
A no-fly zone has been established over the Canfield Mountain area due to the ongoing emergency. This includes a strict prohibition on drone use. Unauthorized aircraft or drones in the area pose a serious risk to both firefighting and law enforcement operations. Residents and the public are urged to respect the airspace restrictions until further notice.

UPDATE – 5:50 p.m., June 29, 2025:
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris will hold another press briefing at 9:30 p.m. on June 29 at the Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management Emergency Operations Center. The shelter-in-place order remains in effect and was earlier expanded to include areas south of Hayden Lake Road and east of 15th Street in Coeur d’Alene.

COEUR D’ALENE, ID – Two firefighters are dead and multiple suspects remain at large following a wildfire response that escalated into a shooting incident on Canfield Mountain Sunday afternoon, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a wildfire burning on Canfield Mountain. By around 2:00 p.m., shots were reported in the area, prompting a law enforcement response. The fire and active shooter situation remain ongoing.

According to information shared during a press briefing, the fire is believed to have been set by the suspects. Upon arrival, firefighters came under gunfire. Two individuals believed to be firefighters were killed.

As of 4:30 p.m., first responders were still taking fire from what appeared to be multiple suspects using high-powered rifles. A shelter-in-place order remains active, and the fire is currently uncontrolled due to the continued threat.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is preparing a strategy to neutralize the suspects. The FBI is en route to assist. Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area.
