Asotin County Enacts Countywide Burn Ban Amid Fire Danger

ASOTIN COUNTY, WA — The Asotin County Board of Commissioners has enacted an emergency ordinance suspending all fires, open burning, and fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county, effective at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 5.

Citing unusually hot and dry conditions and an increased fire hazard, the Board unanimously approved Ordinance No. 2025-28 this morning. The ban applies to all areas outside the city limits of Clarkston and Asotin.

What’s Prohibited:

  • All fires, open burning, and use of fireworks are suspended until further notice.

What’s Allowed:

  • Campfires within designated fire pits at Chief Timothy Park (island only), unless a Washington State-wide burn ban is enacted.

  • Propane fire rings, propane grills, and charcoal barbecues.

Penalties:

  • First offense: $200 fine (minimum $100 not deferrable)

  • Second offense: $500 fine (minimum $300 not deferrable)

  • Third offense: Up to $1,000 (minimum $500 not deferrable)

  • Fourth offense: Up to $10,000 (minimum $1,000 not deferrable)

  • Each day of a continuing violation constitutes a separate offense.

The ordinance also authorizes recovery of fire suppression costs and investigative expenses in cases of illegal burns.

Note on Fireworks:
Fireworks may still be discharged on July 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and on July 4 from 11:00 a.m. to midnight. However, all fireworks use will be prohibited starting July 5 at 6:00 a.m.
