COEUR D’ALENE, ID — A 73-year-old Coeur d’Alene man has been sentenced to serve jail time after being found guilty of trespassing while hunting on private property.
John Allison Huckabay was convicted of misdemeanor Recreational Trespass following a one-day jury trial held June 24, 2025. The conviction stems from a November 3, 2023 incident, when a property owner’s security system captured footage of a man carrying a rifle and wearing a camouflage jacket on their land. Upon reviewing the footage, the landowner recognized the individual as Huckabay and contacted law enforcement.
Investigators with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game also identified Huckabay, noting he had previously been involved in illegal hunting activity in the area. In 2018, Huckabay was convicted of felony Unlawful Possession of a Wild Animal for illegally killing and possessing a cow moose in October 2014.
At sentencing, Kootenai County Magistrate Judge Tristan Poorman imposed a 180-day jail term, with 60 days to be served and the remaining 120 days suspended. Huckabay was also placed on two years of probation and will have his hunting license suspended for three years. He is required to report to jail on September 15, 2025, to begin serving his sentence.
Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Art Verharen and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Shannon Jackson prosecuted the case. Prosecuting Attorney Stanley T. Mortensen thanked them, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and the reporting landowner for their roles in the successful outcome.
