WINCHESTER, ID — A cyanobacteria (harmful algal bloom) alert has been issued for Winchester Lake State Park after recent water samples revealed elevated toxin levels. The samples, collected by the Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Division, indicate the presence of harmful cyanobacteria that could pose health risks to humans, pets, and livestock.
Park officials are urging the public to exercise caution when recreating near the water. Visitors are advised not to drink the affected water, and to keep pets and livestock away from the lake. Direct contact with the water should also be avoided.
If fishing in the area, officials recommend cleaning and rinsing fish with clean water and consuming only the fillet portion.
