SPOKANE, WA – A false report of an active shooter at Riverfront Park caused panic and briefly delayed the city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration late Friday night.
According to the Spokane Police Department, the erroneous report began circulating shortly after 10 p.m. during the fireworks display. Authorities believe a possible physical altercation near the park’s clocktower may have led to the confusion.
Officers quickly responded to the scene and found no evidence of any shooting. The report was determined to be unfounded.
The false alarm caused a temporary disruption and scattered the crowd of thousands gathered for the show. Police have confirmed that any circulating information or rumors about an active shooter incident are false.
The fireworks celebration resumed shortly after the situation was assessed.
