PULLMAN, WA – Dr. Warwick Bayly, a leading equine veterinarian and longtime faculty member at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has been selected as the recipient of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine’s 2025 Specialty Lifetime Achievement Award in Large Animal Internal Medicine.

The award, presented during the ACVIM Forum held June 19–21 in Louisville, Kentucky, honors Bayly’s decades of leadership, scholarship, and service to the field. A diplomate of the ACVIM, Bayly is recognized internationally for his expertise in equine medicine and exercise physiology. He is co-author of the renowned textbook Equine Internal Medicine and has authored about 200 scientific papers, full-length conference proceedings, and textbook chapters related to equine internal medicine and exercise science.

Bayly is recognized internationally for his expertise in equine medicine and exercise physiology.

“I was initially in disbelief when informed that I was receiving this award. While I am the fortunate recipient of it, it is really a shared award, as it is only because of the collective efforts of hundreds of colleagues, collaborators, and students I was selected,” Bayly said. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with all of them, and I have many wonderful memories of the journey we have taken together.”

During his more than 40 years at WSU, Bayly has held numerous leadership roles, including dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and WSU Provost and Executive Vice President. Throughout his career, he has remained a dedicated clinician, mentor, and researcher. His research interests include equine exercise physiology, exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), equine nutritional supplements, and equine respiratory disease.

The ACVIM’s recognition awards are peer-nominated and selected by a rotating committee of specialists from across the country. Based in Englewood, Colorado, the ACVIM is the certifying organization for veterinary specialists in cardiology, large animal internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, oncology, and small animal internal medicine. The organization has more than 3,800 members worldwide.
